The setup and piece placement for this 3d chess game is slightly different in that the king (the kobayshi maru) is placed in the center of the array (levels 4
and 5) which represents the neutral zone.  Level four is the Klingon side of the neutral zone and level five is the federation side of the neutral zone. The king
(the kobayshi maru) is paced on the Klingon side of the neutral zone and it is not moved by either side.

The objective of the black (the federation) side is to rescue the kobayashi maru and return it safely to federation space. The objective of the white side
(Klingons) is to prevent the rescue of the Kobayshi maru and to capture as many of the black pieces as possible. For the black side to accomplish its mission
it must safely place a major piece adjacent to the king and once that is done on its very next move (both piece are moved as one) return to its starting position.
Thus the successful rescue of the kobayashi maru. . .
While the black side is attempting to reach the king the objective of the white side (the Klingons) is not to rescue but to prevent the rescue of Kobayashi maru
and to take advantage; the kobayashi maru is being used by the Klingons to lure federation starships into their side of the neutral zone so as to be capture.
Thus the objective of the white side (Klingons) is to simply capture as many of the black pieces as possible. Once all of the black pieces are capture off the
board then the Klingons’ win the game.
Note:
If and when black is able to place a major piece adjacent to the King, that piece cannot leave/move while under attack, or if its path is block, moreover, the
black piece attached to the King most have a clear  path to make one single jump.  One move, one direction, one turn – to level  (8) the federation starting
point.
White (Klingons) can cross into the federation side of the neutral zone to capture black pieces.
Why not capture the white king and end the game?
Your objective is to rescue the kobayshi maru, not to invade Klingon space. Under no circumstance are you to invade Klingon space beyond the neutral zone.
Any black (federation) piece that invades Klingon space is an act of war--.
There is no pawn promotion; Pawns are forbidden to enter into Klingon space –this includes crossing into the neutral zone!
